COZY WITH A CHANCE OF COLOR

It got cold in Texas today. I've been saving this huuuuge sweater for the first frigid day we've had of 2010. I know that sounds silly but I don't get to wear my cold weather clothes all the time so I like to make it count when I do get to. I was worried that I was gonna look too frumpy in the big sweater but I love how the boots make it look nicer.

I took my best friend and her bf to a few thrift stores in McKinney. She ended up finding a bunch of blazers and suit skirts that she liked. One came from Nieman Marcus and was only $1.75, can we say steal? She ended up loving the thrift shopping experience which makes me happy because I don't get to see her that often so when I do I like to share things like that with her.

I also found a J.Crew winter white skirt for $1.75 that I can't wait to style up. I've been dying to try the winter white thing for quite some time now, I just didn't have any items but thanks to my friendly neighborhood Goodwill now I do!

(Sweater: Thrifed Abercrombie; Tights: Target; Necklace: Walmart; Belt F21; Boots: Charles David)

Tonight I'm trying out a little wine bar in McKinney that I've been dying to go to. It is called Zin Zen Wine Bistro, I'll be sure to let everyone know how it is, of course. Happy weekend!

JUICY

No, not juicy as in the "J-U-I-C-Y" spelled across your bum juicy. Just juicy as in lemony yellow and raspberry colors. As predicted yesterday, it was a pretty dull day outside today. Even though I spent most of my day inside attending an orientation for a class and cleaning, these pretty colors still helped brighten my day.

I actually only wore this for the first half of the day to my orientations and then just changed by into it for evening to go on a mini road trip. What mini road trip you may ask? To Mansfield, Texas to see a man about a bike. I've been dying for a little vintage bike to ride around and my wonderful boyfriend found the perfect kelly green bike on Craig's list. So, we're taking a trip down to see it and hopefully I'll be the proud mama to a vintage Beach Cruiser.

LATE NIGHT INSPIRATION

I plan most of my outfits the night before. Some of them I even plan a few days in advance. I do this for a couple reasons: it keeps me from being rushed in the morning, it guarantees (almost) that I don't default to jeans/tee/converse, and it helps me utilize and be creative with more of my closet. Oh yeah, and also because I have a two year old that doesn't care if I am put together or not - as long as I dance to "Wonder Pets" with her as soon as she wakes up.

Well, last night I went to bed with an entirely different outfit sitting out. At 3 am I woke up and couldn't fall back to sleep so I started looking through my closet to put together some outfits for the rest of the week/weekend. Is that weird? Anyway, this is what came of it.

LIBRARIAN CHIC

I bought this skirt with the intention to hem it, but I couldn't wait to wear it so I decided I'd go for a librarian chic (I hope) look today. I love the warm colors and pattern of it. It reminds me of crisp Autumn days, which is fitting because we are having Autumn weather in Texas right now.

The day held a trip to Half Price Books for a few decorating magazines and a new book for BG. I decided to run with the librarian thing and shoot some photos among the books. It is fitting because I adore books, especially used books. My favorite book stores are hole in the wall, mom and pop owned placed with just smorgasbord of random reading material. The two books that I will buy every time I see them at a used book store (no matter how many copies I have) are Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Desiree (a bit narcissistic, yes) by Annemarie Selinko.

QUICKSILVER

I thrifted this skirt a couple of months ago because I wanted to try to mix metallics into my daytime wardrobe. Its silver, it just didn't photograph silver. It never quite made the cut. Once I got it home I could never figure out what to pair it with other than just basic black and white. So today I made myself whip something together with it. It took three different combinations before I decided I liked it but I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm pretty sure Kyla at Blue Collar Catwalk has the same little mini.

(Shirt: F21; Skirts: Express - Thifted; Tights: Walmart; Shoes: Ann Taylor; Necklace: F21)

All I did today was go check out the new Kroger that opened right by my house. It is pretty darn cool. It has all kinds of stuff - groceries (obviously), jewelry, furniture, and housewares. I approve. After Kroger I came home to put BG down for a nap and ended up falling asleep with her.

OUT OF FOCUS

Today was my first photoshoot as my own photographer. I tracked down a tripod and put it to use. I'm not sure I can call it a success. I took a ton of photos and most of them were out of focus, which goes along with most of my day because I don't feel like I absorbed much of anything today. I needed something for the camera to focus on while I was pushing the button and it just wasn't working. These three are the only ones that were acceptable.

This outfit kept me clothed through my second day back to school and my first day in my environmental science lab. It was a long day of expanding my mind, let me tell ya! My outfit was pretty simple. I didn't plan on wearing the scarf by I really needed an extra pop of color and plus did I mention the classrooms are freeeeeezing?!

The weird thing about this one is that I'm not wearing any jewelry, other than stud earrings. I don't normally pile it on or anything but I usually wear a little somethin' somethin'.

(Sweater: A'Gaci; Leggings: Walmart; Scarf: Walmart; Boots: Thrifted)

I stopped by The Salvation Army and Goodwill on my way home from class - I HAD to, I passed right by them both! I found my brown woven belt for the summer (for $1!), now I just need my cowboy boots. I also found two big comfy sweaters and two skirts that I plan on altering to make them less schoolmarm-ish.

MIXED COMPANY

I have been wanting to mix patterns for a while now. I just wasn't sure how to go about it. Well I found these two shirts of mine in the back of my mum's closet and returned them to their rightful home. While I was carrying them back to my room I glanced down and thought, hm these really look pretty good together. So I decided to make the mixing of patterns happen.

I didn't mean to have a whole black and white theme - it just happened. I love how it turned out though. I felt all Parisian and chic, especially with the red lips.

SCHOOL IS COOL

Raise your hand if you love the first day of school?
*Desiree raises hand!*

Whew, what a day. It seemed really long but when I looked back, I really didn't do much but listen to professors read their syllabi and spend about a million dollars on books. While we're on the subject of books - Can these publishers not knock the price down just a smidgen? I bought a USED (yes not new) math book for $104.25! Come on people, help a starving student out! At least I'll be able to keep three of the books for when I start teaching, they look like they have some excellent reference material. Find the positive, the glass is half-full.

Oh yes, my outfit. This skirt used to be a dress but I shrunk it. It was long enough that I may have been able to retain some modesty if I wore it with tights but decided to chop it up instead. It had a black tank attached to it, so I just cut that off and - viola, a new skirt. I am also planning on wearing it belted as a tube top with cutoffs when the weather gets a little warmer.

The rest is pretty simple. Tight = warmth in cold classrooms. Low heels because I didn't know how much walking I'd be doing. Pop of color (mustard!!) in the form of a belt. While I was in class I wore my burgundy sweater from "Black Love Brown" because those classrooms really are freezing.

Now I'm off to pour through the endless amount of first-day-of-classes paperwork. Hope you had a great Tuesday!

FANTASY V. REALITY

Today was spent trying to find a place that would cash a postal check so that I could get a few last minute things I needed for school - um, no luck. When I went to bed last night I had the dress/blazer/wedges combo in mind but today proved to be far too windy for said outfit. Plus, I ended up having a play date at the park with the boyfriend's sister, her daughter and her nephew and the wedges were not practical for sliding purposes. Plan B was not quite as cute as plan A was, but it got the job done. It's okay though because my best friend is coming down for a visit at the end of the month (yay!) and I'm sure I'll get the opportunity to wear this cute combo then.

Plan A:

(Blazer: Thrifted; Dress: Nordstrom; Shoes: Coach; Belt: Thrifted)

Plan B:

(Blazer: Thrifted; Shirt: Victoria's Secret; Jeans; F21; Shoes: Converse)

I start classes tomorrow. I always get super excited about the first day of classes. I love everything about it - the optimism of starting fresh, the new school supplies, the new people/professors you get to meet, everything. It has such a rosy outlook to me. This semester is going to extra exciting (read: busy) because I am getting into my classes for my major. I still get super excited about planning my first day outfit. I still don't know what mine is going to be yet but I'm thinking a dress because I feel like being girly. Does anybody else get excited about the first day or work/school/whatever outfits or am I just a total nerd?

BRIGHT SUNSHINY DAY

I keep telling fibs in my post titles. I didn't get rained on yesterday and today was definitely not a bright sunshiny day, buuuut I did wear yellow today and yellow always makes me feel sunny and cheerful.

Have I ever mentioned that yellow and grey is one of my FAVORITE color combinations ever? Well - it is. I know I've said that I am loving grey right now and adding a little splash of yellow to it just seems ... right. I have a pair of little yellow kitten wedges and a grey dress that I'm dying to break out. I'll have to mix them in very soon.

The rest of my outfit is super simple - ballet flats for comfort, soft (grey!) wrap for warmth and a big cocktail ring to add a little glam to an otherwise very simple outfit. I am spending the evening/night scrapbooking with my mum so I just want to be warm and comfy. Mission accomplished. What do you guys wear when you want to be comfy but not frumpy?

RAINDROPS KEEP FALLING ON MY HEAD

Actually that title is not true. No raindrops fell on my head today, which is disappointing to me because I love the rain. I was all ready in my wellies today when I looked outside and saw that it was completely dry. When I checked the weather I realize that we only had a 50% chance and not until the evening - UGH. I hate when Texas weather people build up all this mess about the huge "monsoon" we're going to have and then nothing happens. It saddens me.

Enough ranting about the Texas weather situation though. So I've seen all of these awesome fashion bloggers mixing mustard and purple. I was a bit hesitant at first because as far as color combos go, I never really thought of those two together. At first, I had this mustard shirt on with a purple dress, black leggings and my wellies but I decided there wasn't enough purple in the wellies and scrapped everything but the leggings and the shirt.
Then, this outfit was born. I hardly ever wear this shirt because I always think that it looks like a uniform shirt and it wrinkles easily AND the collar never lays right (ok why did I buy this thing?). But today I decided that if I paired it with some colorful items it didn't look completely bad.

(Shirt: F21; Tee: A'gaci; Scarf: F21; Leggings: Walmart; Boots: Thrifted)

I adore my boots. I was worried they wouldn't be very comfy but I wore them shopping with my friend Ashlee for a few hours and they were great. They are just the right amount of beat up. I love it.

And, I kid you not, these three song came on my iTunes one right after the other while I was writing this post. I think it is a sign that it is going to rain more.
"Raindrops keep fallin' on my head." -B.J. Thomas (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head (duh))
"It's more than just words: it's just tears and rain." -James Blunt (Tears and Rain)
"Thunder only happens when its rainin'." -Fleetwood Mac (Dreams)

PICNICS IN JANUARY

It is January but in Texas that rarely means anything and seeing as it was in the high 50s today, I decided to take BG on a picnic. We packed fruits, veggies, and cheese then headed off to the park. BG got so excited about going to the park, feeding the "duckies" and eating outside. Isn't it so awesome how kids get excited over simple things like eating outside?! I love it.

And, just for the record, a poncho just slips over your head and a cape ties around your neck (so I was informed by my step-dad this morning). I jazzed up the poncho with a pin I inherited from my great-grandmother, which my mum promptly informed me that it looks like a snowflake - I disagree. She had a ton of jewelry that nobody ever knew existed. So many cool pieces.

CABLE KNIT AWESOME-NESS

This is the story of a girl who saw many wonderful fashion bloggers pairing cable knit tights with shorts and boots. This girl loved this look and wanted to try it herself. Sadly, her wardrobe was lacking both wool shorts and cable knit tights. She scoured the internet for a reasonably priced pair and came up with options from Banana Republic, J.Crew, and Gap - Gap being the best priced at two for $20. So she drove to the mall and purchased two pairs of beautiful knit tights. Then she ventured down to Sears and was looking around the sale racks. There in all their glory were are pair of gorgeously thick charcoal grey cable knit tights and for the low price of $5.99. This very frugal girl immediately took her butt back to Gap and returned the overpriced tights in favor of the $5.99 ones. This girl was me - surprise, surprise.

Obviously, these are my new tights and I love them. I really do wish I had the wool shorts instead of the denim ones, but I love how it turned out nonetheless. I love nature prints and jewelry for some reason, so this bird and branch shirt is a favorite of mine. I normally only break it out in the summer but since I'm wearing shorts I thought, hey why not?

(Shirts: Bird-Target Black-F21; Shorts: Target; Tights: Sears)

I've had an oddly productive day. Since BG is with her grandma today and the weather is gorgeous, I'm off to check out some new (to me) thrift stores and possibly take a stroll around my new campus because I start classes on Monday - yay! No seriously, yay, I looove school! Yes, I am a total nerd.

SPRING BLOSSOMS

I love, love, love this shirt. I promised myself that I'd play around with patterns more, thus this shirt. The pattern on this shirt reminds me of flowers, even though when you look closer they are really just splotches. I bought it at the same time I bought my "Senorita" shirt; it was on sale for $2.99. I am so excited to wear this with cute little cut off shorts, but I couldn't wait until summer so I had to pair it with a long sleeved tee.

The shirt came with a matching belt, but I never like to keep it so matchy/matchy so I replaced it with the black patent skinny belt. I like how it toughens it up a little. The next time I wear this I'm thinking leather jacket, studded belt and boots. I love the thought of the frilly shirt with the tough details.

I also love these shoes. I was dying for a pair of nude flats and I saw I pair I loved at Steve Madden. When I went in to try them on I realized that they were $70 and I was not too happy. Then I saw these little thing on a half off rack. They have a tiny wedge heel, which works just fine. I ended up getting these and a pair of mocs for less than the first pair - score! They match with so many things and are pretty comfy - double score!

PURPLE PASSION

Today was the first day I had any desire to even leave my house. I had to buy BG a new earring because she lost the back to one of hers and had been running around with just one in for the last week. So today holds a trip to Walmart and Target. Can I just say, I could live in Target. I love it - seriously. I could get lost in that store for hours.

Coming back from that tangent, about the outfit. I really love this belt. I bought it from the huge F21 in Union Square when I was in NY for my best friend's birthday. It also came in an awesome teal color and I'm kicking myself for not buying both. At the time I was trying to resist buying things I love in every single color.

ORANGE YOU GLAD I DIDN'T SAY BANANA?

Again with the mixing neutrals today. I am just on a neutral-mixing roll, I guess. The truth is, I've had these pants for a few weeks and I just wasn't feeling jeans today. I wanted to be as comfy as possible. I love this shirt. It is tissue thin and long, two of my favorite things. I also like how it isn't cut straight across on the bottom.

I had plans to actually do stuff today but as soon as I woke up, I knew that wasn't happening. I have the most terrible cough that makes me sound like an 80 year old man and all I wanna do is sleep, and then sleep some more. I think I might actually have to break down and go to the doctor if it isn't any better by tomorrow. For today, my snuggie, hot tea, and movies are on the menu - all very glamourous, I know.

(Shirt: Walmart; Sweater: Norstrom; Pants: F21; Boots: Steve Madden; Necklaces: F21)

So now I'm off to lay in my comfy bed and watch a movie. I had my heard set on Shag with Bridget Fonda. Has anybody else ever seen this movie? Anywho, I can't find it and I'm very disappointed because I used to like that movie a lot and wanted to reunite myself with it - sigh. I guess I'll have to find something else to take its place. Have a good Thursday and keep warm if your city is riddled with wintry weather!

Oh and my over-dye job will have to wait until tomorrow, unfortunately. I hate when I get so excited to do something and then stuff gets in the way. But, I think this over-dying thing is going to open a whole new world for my wardrobe - very exciting.

SENORITA

This tank top makes me feel like I should be on a beach in Mexico. But, I'm not. I'm running errands in Frisco, Texas.

(Coat: Old Navy; Sweater: Target; Tank Top: F21; Jeans: F21; Belt: F21; Boots: Enzo Angiolini)

This shirt makes me feel like I should be on a beach in Mexico. I mentioned a few posts ago that I don't have any patterns in my closet. That is mostly due to the limited budge that I have to spend on clothing - I want to buy pieces that I can remix over and over that don't look like they've been remixed over and over. BUT, I was in Forever 21 (where else) and I saw this little number on sale for $3.99. I figured it would be a nice cheap way to try out a little pattern, plus I can wear it in the summer too. I love all the colors in it, it leaves so much leeway for choosing accessories.

There wasn't much going on today. I had to take my mum to the doctor, go to the bank and run a few errands. This was warm and comfy to do so in. The good news is that I got to go to Joanne Fabric and I got dye to do my first over-dye job! I'll be posting pictures of how that goes later on tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm excited to see how it turns out. I'm trying to make a light grey pair of jeans dark grey, we'll see how it goes. Cross your fingers for me.

SICK-ISH DAY

I had every intention of getting dressed and going to Joanne Fabric to get dye to do an over-dye job on a pair of jeans that need an update buuuut I really wasn't feeling so hot so I stayed home. This outfit proved to be awesome for lounging though. Leggings+dress+comfy sweater = lounging bliss in my book.

I nabbed two sweater coats on sale at Old Navy for $20 each. I am a huge fan of the sweater coat because I live in Texas and a lot of the time it doesn't get cold enough to wear a real coat until December-ish, thus the sweater coat tricks me into thinking that I am actually getting to participate in lovely fall fashion.

This belt was from my very first thrifting experience. I am now on a search to find something similar but in an awesome cognac/tan/brownish color to wear with summer dresses and cowboy boots. Well, to wear with summer dresses and cowboy boots AFTER I find myself a great pair of cowboy boots. So basically, I have the outfit in my head and almost zero of the elements. Ahhhh I will find them though.

(Sweater: Old Navy; Dress: H&M; Shirt: F21; Leggings: Walmart; Boots: Enzo Angiolini; Belt: Thrifted; Rings: Thrifted & Step-Dad's class ring)

These boots, oh these boots. I love them. They are my very first flat leather boot purchase (1/2 off at the Nordstrom semi-annual sale) and I wear them to death. They are super comfy and just a smidge big so that I can wear thick socks with them. They are just fabulous.

KEEP ME WARM

I like to spend time getting myself ready but that doesn't mean that I neglect to dress BG adorably. Of course, later on today I will be posting my outfit (duh). I wanted to post these because I had a funny blurb about her.

BG has been sick with a cough, so she has been sleeping with me. Who am I kidding she sleeps with me most of the time (I just can't HELP it, I love cuddling with her). Anyway, no matter what side of the co-sleeping argument you're on it is hard to not have your child with you when she is sick. I digress. Last night BG was sleeping in my bed and I had to put a few clothes away so I was doing so very quietly. She must have been sleeping lightly because she woke up. This is the conversation that followed:

BG: "What doin, mama?"
Me: "Putting some clothes away. Its okay, put your head down and rest."
BG: "What happen?"
Me: "Nothing baby, everything is fine."
BG: "Come sleep, mama."
Me: "I will in a second, I just need to finish this."

She then paused thoughtfully for a few moments.

BG (in her very sweetest BG voice): "I'm cold. Please get me warm, mama."
Me: "Awwwwwwwwww."

Obviously, this was a huge ploy thought up in her in her two year old mind to get me to lay down with her for a little while. And it worked. What can I say, they are only this little once.

BLACK LOVES BROWN

(Sweater: F21; Turtleneck: Burlington Coat Factory; Jeans/Leggings: F21; Belt: Thrifted Nine West; Boots: Target; Bag: Foley + Corinna)

I had a couple errands to run today and then decided to have an impromptu lunch/play date with one of my mommy friends. Looking back, the heels were probably not the best idea for running after a 2 and 3 year old, but it could have been worse.

I've been pining to mix neutrals for a while now. I was first inspired by the ladies over at Academichic when I saw how wonderfully they mixed neutrals. I always thought that black and brown didn't go together - I was so wrong. I think with the right mix, it looks awesome. I'm pretty happy with how the outfit came together. On another note, while I was getting dressed today I realized that I have barely any patterns in my closet. I am going to check around on the sales racks and thrift store to wade into the pool of colorful patterns.

Okay, I have to give these pants/leggings/jeggings/whateverrrr a HUGE thumbs up. They are the most comfortable thing. Ever. I love them and I don't think I ever want to wear real denim again (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but they are just so great). Anyway, the turtleneck and sweater are staples in my wardrobe because I'm a sucker for sweaters and the color black. These boots were a struggle to get. I wanted them forever and when I saw them in my local Target store I was going to get them, then I decided not to, then they didn't have them when I went back because I decided I was dumb for not getting them, then they didn't have them in my size online and I was one sad girl. Then, one day when I wasn't even looking for them - there they were in my size. It was fate and I had to buy them. I realize that that was one giant, crazy sentence but anybody else who loves shoes will understand.

Hope you all had a magical Monday!

GREEN WITH ENVY

(Coat: XOXO-via TJMaxx; Shirt: Target; Jeans: F21; Shoes: Nine West; Belt: F21 Earrings: Old Navy; Necklace: Walmart)

Whew. I thought I had a pretty good sense of fashion but that was all challenged when I was trying to decide what to wear today. I knew I’d be doing my first “Daily Duds” fashion post and I was very intimidated. I had something simple in mind and after trying a few things on this just came together. I ended up not wearing the heels and paired it with a pair of leopard Steve Madden flats because I am trying Urban Crust in Plano tonight and I really don’t think it is that dressy. I love it with the heels but it looked really cute and casual with the flats. Either way, this coat is awesome. I’m loving the color.
