AUTUMN AT THE ARBORETUM

One of my favorite places in Dallas is the Dallas Arboretum. Dallas doesn't have many trees and foliage, which is something that I really miss having moved from Pennsylvania. The arboretum offers extensive varieties of flora and fauna, as well as tons of little picnic areas and fitness trails. One of the events that I look forward to most is Autumn at the Arboretum because it actually feels more like Autumn (Texas generally doesn't experience much Autumn) because of all the orange/yellow/red flowers and large shade trees.

Normally is is $10 a person to get in but I actually scored a deal for 1/2 of tickets (and purchased them with a credit for a grand total of - free!) on Groupon. Which, on another note, if you aren't on Groupon and you're near a bigger city, you should be. There are SO many great deals - think 50% off a whole Gap purchase, 90% off spa packages, and even tons of cheap tickets to concerts and sporting goods. SO, go check it out and sign up at Groupon. I am not endorsed by Groupon at all, I just really think it is a cool site that can save you money on fun stuff that you might already buy. And who doesn't like to save money?

I talked about wanting to find a darker chambray top but talking myself out of it because it already have a light one. When I was at the mall returning something last weekend, I couldn't hold my ground against JCPenny's 50% off sale. It is dark, tunic length, and just right. To be completely honest, I wore it Thursday, today and I will probably wear it all weekend. I don't even know if I want to take it off long enough to wash it.

DENIM, LEATHER AND LACE

Remind me never to take blog photos with au natural lips again.

Every once in a while (ok ok, about once a week for girl's night) I really enjoy taking a day look and switching it up for night. It makes me feel as if I'm getting more milage from my clothes. That, and it means that I get to spend less time thinking about what to wear between class and girls night and more time grabbing a quick nap.

DEAR THREADLESS, YOU ROCK

A few weeks ago the lovely people over at Threadless asked me if I'd like to sample their new t-shirt line, Select. I am running low in the cool t-shirt department and, lets face it, sometimes you just need a fun shirt to put a casual spin on an outfit. It took me a super long time to pick out which design I wanted because, well, they are all so awesome. I finally settled on 'Birds of a Feather' because it was the one that caught my eye first but I also loved 'I Am Shy but You Can Reach Me' and 'Summer's Passing.'

I got my shirt in the mail on Monday and I couldn't wait to style it. I decided to go super comfy because I spent the day picking out and sampling paint for our front room. The shirt is so soft and stretchy but not too thin, which is really like. I also love the length. It looks good hanging down, tucked in, or even tied up in a knot at my hip. Actually, I liked it so much that I wore it two days in a row, so check back for a rapid repeat tomorrow.

ON TREND

In the November issue of InStyle, the editors informed me that watercolor prints were "on trend" this season. I thought to myself, hm yes watercolor prints are pretty, and then I moved on. I promptly forgot all about watercolor prints because I am trying to mentally preparing myself to go on a spending freeze.

Spending freeze or no spending freeze, I had to get baby girl out of the house on Saturday afternoon because we are staining our concrete floors and I'm pretty sure the fumes are not good for her. That, and she was kinda getting in the way by 'helping' a bit too much. Since it was raining I had to cross the park off the list of possible things to do - which left the mall (too crowded), grocery shopping (which I prefer to do without the three year old that only wants to eat golden oreos) or a new thrift store (winner, winner).

Over all, I was pretty underwhelmed with the new thrift store. I've head raving reviews about it but I didn't really find much despite truly combing the racks. Although I know thrifting is a hit or miss, I always get a little bummed when I don't find much. I'll stop back thought because it was super clean and super organized, which I am a super fan of. As I was about to give up and head home, I found this top on a rack labeled "Better Clothes." Hm, why didn't I START there? Watercolor prints, check. White tag = half off, check. I'll buy into a trend when it only cost for $4.

JUMPY DRESS

Sometimes I just don't want to have to worry about belts, accessories or wrinkles. When this relatively lazy mood strikes (normally on most Saturdays, occasionally on Fridays - heck lets just call it the whole weekend) I always reach for what I have dubbed a 'jumpy' dress. I have professed my complete and totally love of these dresses several times, like here and here, yet I don't believe I've ever shared my term for them.

jumpy dress noun:
1. Dress characterized by a fiber content of at least 5% spandex and 95% of whatever else (normally polyester if we're being honest in this definition).
2. The best kind of dress. Ever.

I call it is jumpy dress because, well, it is bouncy and it always springs back into shape. Don't ask why I don't call it a 'bouncy' dress because I don't really know, jumpy dress just stuck as an acknowledged name between my mum and me.

So, yes, this is the very simple formula that I use when I don't want to think but I don't want to stay in my pjs - jumpy dress + me.

HOUSE HUNTER

One of my absolute favorite things to do online (besides blogging and reading blogs) is look at houses for sale. They don't even necessarily have to be in my city. Sometimes I just pick a town that I think it would be fun to live in and browse away. I have lists on three or four different real estate websites and I am constantly adding more. Many of the houses that I add are simply inspiration for different features I want my home to have someday.

This particular morning I picked a town close to home - McKinney. I know I've raved about historic downtown McKinney time and time again, but that is just because it is such a quaint little place and I am always sucked in by places like that.

What is nice about looking at homes for sale that are also close by is that you can drive by and check them out - another one of my favorite things to do. I love getting in the car and just driving around cute little neighborhoods to see what they have to offer. So, we drove around looking at pretty houses while baby girl grabbed a little mobile nap. When she woke up (and had to use the potty hehe) we scoped out a cute little ice cream/coffee place called Coffee N Cream and decided we needed a sweet treat.

I have been wanting some wide leg trouser-ish jeans lately and I found these on super sale at Ross, so I decided to go for it. I couldn't figure out why I felt so strange in them until I realized that nearly every pair of jeans I own are skinny jeans. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the skinnies but I really like how the wide legs totally changes the look of a simple outfit. I felt super 70-ish when I paired my clogs with them. I felt great in them, so I think I'm sold. What do you guys think? Are you fan of a variety of denim or do you mostly stick to one style?

LOVE/HATE

I have a love/hate relationship with this skirt. I bought it online and in the photo it looked as if it sat at your natural waist. In reality is is very low-slung. I can't figure out how to wear it like that. I just end up cinching it up with a belt. It slips down every 45 seconds and I have to hike it back up. It is a very high maintenance skirt. Perhaps I could take the side seems in and forces it to be more high waisted?

CAN'T GET ENOUGH

I can't get enough of these jeans lately. I love it when I rediscover things in my closet. I was in NY last September for my best friend's birthday and I bought them to wear out because it was kinda chilly for the dress I had packed. They served they're purpose but other than my very first outfit post, I haven't really worn them again. Now I don't want to take them off.

UNCERTAIN

Over the weekend we ventured out to East Texas for a bit of a day trip. Our destination was Uncertain. Yes, Uncertain is the name of the town. How could I NOT want to visit a town with a name like that? The actual town was kind of touristy and since it was the end of the season they're wasn't a whole lot going on. But the lake was super pretty and I really loved my outfit that day, so we snapped some shots and went on our way.

On the way we passed through Jefferson, a town with the most adorable downtown main street with tons of little antique shops. I was determined to stop and check it out on the way back. We didn't get to hit all of the shops because many of them were closing by the time we made our way back, but we did get to browse a couple of the bigger ones. We ate dinner at a neat looking diner called Glory Dayz. It has the cutest outdoor patio with colorful, mismatched chairs at tables with umbrellas. It was cute, which was its saving grace because it took forever to get our food and when we did it wasn't the best. But, what can I say, I'm a sucker for kitschy places like that.

Anyway, I'm finding that I'm a sucker for plaid flannel. It just is so cozy and autumn-y. I have to stop myself from buying every piece of plaid flannel that I see. I even sleep in it (seriously, THE best pj bottoms ever). I think I'm going to cut myself off before I turn into a lumberjack. Two pairs of pjs and one shirt with suffice, I believe.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCMENT

Dear Texas Weather gods,

I am very sick of 49* mornings and 85* afternoons. Please do something about this. My outfit was spot on when I left my house at 7:30am yet when I ventured outside again at 2:00pm, it was rather warm hot. And since I'm taking the time to write a letter and all, I might as well let you know that I'm kind of sick of this Indian Summer business. It is October 15th and I'd really like to bust out some boots and/or tights without looking like an idiot having a heat stroke.

Sincerely,

Distinctly Desiree

PHOTOGRAPHY FRIDAY

DSC_0081
(Third Cupcakes a Charm - Frisco, Texas; October 6, 2010)

This was taken on baby girl's birthday. Yes, those are three cupcakes sitting in front of her. She had one for her first birthday, two for her second birthday, and needed three for her third birthday. Yes, I am crazy. Luckily she only licked the icing off. It could be worse. Right??

These are those little pill things that you stick in water and they turn into a spongy animal or shape. We got her some princess ones for her birthday and she played with them in her bath. She had so much fun guessing which one would be which. She will not let me throw them out. It is actually getting kinda gross now. But, anyway, I love the super vibrant colors in this photo.

(Big Foot - Frisco, Texas; October 2010)

She was opening presents from her Nana, Papa and Papap (who live in Pennsylvania) and was so absorbed in trying to get the ribbon off. I love how she absentmindedly crosses her feet. I also love how this photo plays with proportions.

SWEETENING THE POT

When I saw this shirt on the sale rack at Target, I knew I had to buy it. I was just loving the autumn-y maroon color and the little flowers all over it. It just sweetened the pot that it was only $4. I realized today that I am shockingly low on blouse type tops. I've been wanting to wear jeans a lot lately so it makes changing up the jean and a t-shirt combo kinda difficult. Perhaps I will have to hit a few thrift stores this weekend since I've got nothing on my agenda. That hasn't happened in nearly a month. How great is that?! NOTHING to do.
